How To Measure For A New Hot Tub Cover

Welcome to our latest blog post, where we dive into the essential steps of measuring for a new hot tub cover.

As any hot tub owner knows, a high-quality cover is crucial for maintaining water cleanliness, energy efficiency and overall enjoyment of your spa. However, finding the perfect fit can sometimes be a daunting task. Fear not! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the simple yet vital process of accurately measuring your hot tub to ensure you get the right cover. Whether you’re a seasoned hot tub enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of hydrotherapy, mastering this measurement technique will set you on the path. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before we delve into the measurement process, ensure you have the necessary tools on hand. You’ll need a measuring tape, a notepad, and a pen. Having these items within reach will streamline the process and ensure accuracy in your measurements.

Step 2: Measure the Width and Length

Begin by measuring the width and length of your hot tub. Stretch the measuring tape from one edge to the other, ensuring it follows the contour of the tub. Take note of these measurements and repeat the process for the length, capturing the dimensions accurately.

Never measure the exact hinge as it is typically shorter than the actual cover.

Step 3: Measure The Radius

This is the one that gets everyone worried. As the diagram below shows the easiest way to measure a radius is with a carpenter square or simply using a straight edge such as a broom handle and a tape measure/ruler and measuring where the two points meet is also another way of doing it.

The dimension needed is from the start of the bend to the imaginary point of the square if the tub was actually square. Rule of thumb is smaller is safer than larger. The smaller the radius the more square the corners of the hot tub cover.

So, for a Square or Rectangle cover with a radius on four corners, to measure radius “C”, extend straight lines indicated in red by laying straightedges against the sides of the spa. Measure from point “Y” to point “Z”.

Step 4: Measure The Cover Skirt

The skirt is the flap that hangs from the bottom of your cover. The skirt protects the acrylic of your spa from UV damage, so it’s important that the skirt covers the acrylic.

Step 5: Capture the Taper Measurements

Hot tub covers often have a taper to allow for water runoff. Measure the taper from the thickest point to the thinnest point, typically at the center. Recording these measurements ensures your new cover aligns perfectly with the design of your hot tub.

Step 6: Measure The Cover Strap

With the straps if you would like them in a specific place and a specific length, then you need to tell us. The strap length is measured from the top of the skirt to the bottom of the strap, not including the buckle.

The strap position can be measured by calculating the strap inset. This is the measurement from the edge of the spa inwards to the middle of the strap. This should then be the same for both sides.

There are four straps all together on our covers which standardly are positioned on the sides that don’t fold 10cm away from the radius end if the corners are rounded or 8cm if square. Circle and Octagon covers are positioned at 2, 4, 8 and 10.
